Wig Washin 101

Although we usually discourage clients from washing and styling their own wigs, in cases where clients are unable to bring their wig into our salon for servicing we have created several tips and guidelines to follow.

THE WASH

  1. Choose salon grade shampoo and conditioner, the exact company is completely up to you.
  2. Brush wig starting at tips, slowly moving to roots. You do not want to be tugging excessively at knots. Be gentle around the top (where the wig is parted).
  3. Place wig on short foam head. Always wash on a head. (Washing without a foam head leads to progressive and irreversible damage to wig top.)
  4. Pin wig to foam head at the sides. Careful not to poke pins through the scalp fabric at the top.
  5. Rinse in warm water. A removable faucet or vegetable washer is easiest, but holding the head under a faucet also works.
  6. Shampoo the wig using gentle strokes starting at the top of the wig. Do not scratch and scrub the way you might shampoo a human head. Strokes should always be in one direction (top to bottom).
  7. Rinse out shampoo.
  8. Repeat steps 5-7.
  9. Use conditioner, focusing on the ends and tips, no need for excessive conditioning on top. At this time you may want to use a large paddle brush to distribute conditioner through entire wig.
  10. Rinse out conditioner.
  11. Squeeze out water with a towel.
  12. Gently brush the wig while it is wet, starting at the bottom and working your way up as before. Brush wig into the approximate desired style (part where you like it).
  13. Leave wig to dry on foam head.
  14. Once completely dry, proceed to style.

THE SET

  1. Place and pin wig on styling head on stand or on the head of a willing participant (husband, boyfriend, son etc. all make for excellent photo ops ☺)
  2. Style as you would style your own hair. We recommend high quality products and equipment to protect the wig.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.
